Boston's CNM community is shaped by an unusually dense concentration of universities and hospitals, MIT, Harvard, BU, Northeastern, Tufts, and dozens of others create a population that's highly educated, transient (students and postdocs cycle through), and intellectually engaged in the ethical frameworks that CNM draws on. The community is academic in tone in a way that's distinctive among US cities: discussions of attachment theory, relationship anarchy theory, and the ethics of hierarchy are more common here than in most places.
The flip side of the university influence is transience. Boston has a high churn rate, people arrive for degrees or fellowships and leave after a few years. The CNM community reflects this: it's large and active at any given moment, but faces more membership turnover than cities where people are more settled.
The polyamory community
Boston Poly is the main organised group, with a long history and consistent activity. The community also includes Harvard- and MIT-adjacent groups and various interest-specific subgroups. Events concentrate in Cambridge (across the Charles from downtown Boston proper), Somerville, and the Jamaica Plain neighbourhood, the progressive and queer-friendly anchors of the metro area.
Jamaica Plain (JP) is particularly worth knowing: a diverse, progressive, heavily queer and CNM-friendly neighbourhood in southwest Boston with good independent venue infrastructure and a community culture that normalises alternative relationship structures.
The poly community here has significant overlap with the academic and scientific communities, the language and frameworks of CNM are treated with the same analytical rigour people bring to their professional work. This produces thoughtful, well-articulated community members and occasionally produces analysis that substitutes for emotional engagement, which is its own thing.
The queer scene
Boston's queer scene is concentrated in the South End neighbourhood, historically the gay neighbourhood, now more mixed but retaining significant queer infrastructure. Jacques Cabaret is the oldest gay bar in the US; other long-running venues anchor the scene.
The leather and kink community is present in the South End, with leather bars and regular kink events. Boston has historically had a strong leather culture, connected to the broader Northeast circuit, though it's smaller than New York's or Philadelphia's scene.
Boston Pride (June) is a large event. The queer community in Cambridge and Somerville is particularly active and politically engaged, with strong trans and non-binary representation.
What apps work here
Feeld, active in Boston, particularly in Cambridge, Somerville, and JP. The educated young professional demographic drives meaningful Feeld usage here.
OkCupid, strong in Boston, reflecting the community's comfort with detailed profile filling and compatibility questions. The academic demographic particularly suits OkCupid's format.
Hinge, very active. Boston has a large population of the demographic Hinge serves best, young, educated, relationship-oriented.
Grindr, active, particularly in the South End and Cambridge. Standard first platform for gay and bi men.
Practical notes
Transience: The university cycle produces significant community turnover. August/September bring large influxes of new people (students arriving); May/June see departures. If you're arriving in Boston, the fall is the best time to plug into the community, events are well-attended and many people are actively building new connections.
The MBTA: Boston's public transit (the T) is functional but showing its age. Cambridge, Somerville, and the South End are well-served; JP less so. Having access to a car or being comfortable cycling helps for events outside the core T routes.
Cost: Boston is expensive, comparable to Washington DC and significantly cheaper than New York or San Francisco, but not cheap. The combination of university salaries and graduate student stipends produces economic diversity within the CNM community.
Providence and New Hampshire: The Boston CNM community has some reach into Providence, RI (an hour south) and southern New Hampshire. People in those areas sometimes participate in Boston events; for people in Boston, the broader region is accessible for visits.
