What Recon is
Recon is the dominant dating and community platform for gay and bisexual men in the leather, fetish, and kink world. Where Grindr is the general-purpose gay dating app and Scruff leans toward bears and community, Recon occupies an even more specific niche: it's built for men whose sexual and social identity is centred on leather, rubber, uniforms, BDSM, and related fetish interests.
The platform has been operating since the late 1990s, an unusual longevity in the app space, and has become the connective tissue of the global gay leather and fetish community. Knowing who's in a city for a leather event, finding connections at Folsom Street Fair or Berlin's Leather Pride, maintaining relationships within a subcommunity that spans continents, Recon handles all of this in ways that Grindr and Scruff don't attempt.
CNM in the leather community
Non-monogamy within the leather and kink community has its own specific character. Open relationships are extremely common, the "play partner" framework, where specific types of sexual or kink activity happen outside a primary partnership with explicit agreements, is the cultural norm rather than the exception. Many leather-identified men maintain primary partnerships alongside an active play partner network that both partners are aware of and often actively involved in building.
This means that on Recon, CNM is not a disclosure requiring explanation, it's the ambient cultural assumption. "Open relationship," "partnered," and "looking" are standard profile configurations. The transparency that CNM requires in mainstream app contexts is simply the default here.
The overlap between the leather community and broader CNM culture is strong but not total. Many leather-identified men practise a form of swinging or play-partner non-monogamy that differs from the emotional connection emphasis of polyamory. The vocabulary and norms are partly shared, partly distinct. Recon operates within the leather community's own framework.
Profile and matching features
Recon profiles are substantially more detailed than Grindr or Scruff for kink-related information. Profile fields include:
- Kink and fetish interests, a granular list covering leather, rubber, uniforms, BDSM roles, and dozens of specific interests
- Role preferences (top, bottom, versatile, dominant, submissive, and specific role identifiers)
- Relationship status, including open relationship and partnered options
- What you're looking for, covering play partners, friends, relationships, and community connection
- Group memberships, connecting to specific leather clubs and organisations
This level of detail allows much more precise matching within the kink community than general-purpose apps. Knowing someone's specific fetish interests and role preferences before initiating contact removes a significant amount of early-conversation friction.
Events and travel
Recon's event directory is one of its most valuable features. It covers major leather and fetish events globally, Folsom Street Fair (San Francisco), Folsom Europe (Berlin), Leather Pride Netherlands (Amsterdam), Black Party (New York), Fetish Week London, International Mr. Leather (Chicago), and dozens of others, with event-specific profile activation that shows who else from the community is attending.
For CNM practitioners who travel for leather events, this is significant infrastructure. Knowing who from your extended community is in Berlin for Folsom Europe, or who's in San Francisco for the Fair, and being able to connect in advance, this is what Recon does that no other platform does as well.
The travel feature also functions for general travel: marking yourself as visiting a city activates your profile in that location's grid, making connections before arrival possible.
User base and geography
Recon's user base is global but unevenly distributed. Cities with established leather communities, London, Berlin, Amsterdam, San Francisco, New York, Sydney, Toronto, Melbourne, Chicago, have meaningful active populations. Cities without significant leather scenes will have thin coverage.
The user base concentrates sharply around major leather events, the grids in event cities become significantly more active in the weeks around Folsom, Leather Pride, and similar gatherings. If you're attending these events, Recon is essential for advance networking.
The platform is essentially male-only in practice, it is designed for gay and bi men, and the user base reflects this. It is not relevant for queer women, straight users, or anyone whose CNM and dating interests don't have a leather or kink component.
Recon vs Grindr and Scruff
These three apps serve overlapping but distinct communities and are not competing directly.
Grindr is the general-purpose gay dating app, maximum reach, proximity-first, used by gay men across all interest profiles. Most leather-identified men are also on Grindr; the reverse is not true. See our Grindr review.
Scruff leans toward bears and has stronger community features than Grindr, with better leather and kink representation than Grindr's general pool. It sits between Grindr and Recon in specificity. See our Scruff review.
Recon is the specialist tool for the leather and fetish community specifically. The profile depth, event directory, and community infrastructure are purpose-built for this community in ways the general apps aren't. For men whose kink identity is central to their dating and community life, Recon is not optional, it's where the community actually is.
Most active leather-community men use all three, with different purposes: Recon for community and event connections, Scruff for the bear and kink-adjacent community, Grindr for general proximity browsing.
Who should use it
Recon is essential for gay and bi men with leather, fetish, or kink identities. If that describes you, you should be on it regardless of what other apps you use, the community is there, the event infrastructure is there, and the profile tools are built for your specific interests.
It is not a general CNM platform and is not relevant outside the gay leather and kink community. If you're a gay CNM man without leather or kink interests, Grindr, Scruff, and Feeld cover your territory more effectively.
