Los Angeles's CNM culture
Los Angeles has a large and active CNM community, but it's shaped fundamentally by the city's geography. LA is not a city where community works the way it does in New York, London, or Berlin. There is no dense urban core where you repeatedly encounter the same people at the same venues. Instead, the CNM community is distributed across a vast metropolitan area, with different concentrations in different neighbourhoods, and the car-dependent infrastructure means that community requires deliberate effort rather than organic encounter.
The neighbourhoods that anchor the CNM and alternative communities most strongly are Silver Lake, Echo Park, and Los Feliz, historically the creative and countercultural heart of the city, with high concentrations of artists, musicians, and people in the entertainment industry. West Hollywood is the centre of the gay community. The Eastside generally skews younger, more politically oriented, and more CNM-open; the Westside is more mainstream, though CNM communities exist there too.
LA's entertainment industry creates a specific social texture: a large population of people who are comfortable with unconventional arrangements, who have significant social capital and disposable income, and who are also often dealing with the particular pressures of industry schedules, long-distance projects, and career-defined social circles. The CNM community reflects this context.
Dating apps in LA
Feeld
Feeld has a meaningful active user base in Los Angeles, one of its stronger US markets alongside New York and San Francisco. The pool is most dense in Silver Lake, Echo Park, Los Feliz, and West Hollywood. The geographic spread of the city means that distance filters are worth setting carefully, what looks like a nearby match on Feeld can involve significant travel time in LA traffic.
OkCupid
OkCupid has a large and CNM-active user base across the LA metro area. The relationship structure settings and question-matching system function well here, LA has enough CNM practitioners that match scores on non-monogamy-relevant questions carry real signal. Worth running alongside Feeld, particularly for reaching people in different parts of the city.
Hinge
Hinge is one of its strongest US markets in Los Angeles. The user base is large, skews toward creative and entertainment industry professionals, and the profile quality is relatively high. For CNM users willing to do manual bio disclosure, Hinge provides access to a large mainstream pool that overlaps only partially with Feeld and OkCupid.
Grindr and queer apps
Grindr is active throughout LA, with particular density in West Hollywood, Silver Lake, and the surrounding areas. The gay CNM community in LA is large and visible. Scruff also has a strong presence, particularly in the leather-identified community. For queer CNM men, both are essential.
Poly community and meetups
LA Poly
LA Poly is the primary poly community organisation in Los Angeles, with a long track record of running events, socials, and educational programming across the city. Their events, happy hours, discussion groups, house parties, are the most accessible entry point for newcomers to the LA poly scene. Current scheduling is maintained through their Meetup.com presence.
Neighbourhood-specific communities
The Silver Lake / Echo Park / Los Feliz cluster has its own informal poly social scene, events circulating through personal networks, house gatherings, and neighbourhood-level community. More accessible through existing community connections than through public listings. Attending a few LA Poly events gives visibility into this layer.
Relationship anarchy community
LA has an active relationship anarchy community, particularly in the Eastside neighbourhoods and among the queer and radical communities. RA-oriented events and discussion groups surface through queer feminist organising spaces and the broader CNM community networks.
Kink and leather scene
Los Angeles has a significant leather and kink community, centred primarily in West Hollywood. The scene has contracted from its peak in previous decades, several iconic venues have closed, but active community remains and has found new forms.
The Eagle LA
The Eagle LA is the primary leather bar in Los Angeles and one of the remaining anchors of the West Hollywood leather community. As with Eagle venues in other cities, it functions as community infrastructure as much as a bar, the regulars have built long-term relationships, and it's the natural starting point for visitors to the LA leather scene.
Leather and kink events
Much of the active LA kink scene operates through events rather than fixed venues, parties, dungeon nights, and community gatherings that circulate through Fetlife and the private networks of established practitioners. The LA Fetlife community is large and active, and searching for LA-based groups is the most reliable way to find current events.
Threshold Society
Threshold is one of Los Angeles's longest-running BDSM education and community organisations, with a history of educational events, workshops, and community gatherings. Events are listed on their website and through Fetlife. For people new to the LA kink community, Threshold events are accessible and educational without requiring existing community connections.
Queer CNM community
LA's queer community is enormous and geographically distributed, West Hollywood is the historic centre, but Silver Lake, Los Feliz, Echo Park, and parts of the Valley all have significant queer populations with varying CNM orientations.
The queer CNM community in LA has significant overlap with the entertainment industry and arts communities, and with the broader RA and relationship-anarchist world on the Eastside. HER has a real user base in LA for queer women and non-binary people. Queer-specific CNM events surface through queer feminist organising networks and social media rather than through mainstream CNM listings.
Annual events
LA Pride (June)
LA Pride is one of the largest Pride events in the US, centred in West Hollywood. The parade and associated events run in mid-June. The CNM and kink communities have their own presence within Pride, and community-specific gatherings run throughout the month.
LASE (LA Slave Exchange) and leather events
Los Angeles hosts several significant leather community events across the year. The LA Leather community calendar, accessible through the Eagle LA and the Fetlife LA leather groups, is the most reliable source for current major events. Timing varies; check the calendar for the year of your visit.
Dore Alley crossover crowd
LA's leather community travels in significant numbers to San Francisco for Folsom Street Fair (September) and Dore Alley / Up Your Alley (July). These events function partly as LA-community gatherings that happen to take place in San Francisco, if you're visiting from LA or wanting to connect with LA community members, the SF events are relevant.
Online communities
LA Poly (Meetup)
The primary public calendar for Los Angeles poly events. The most reliable single resource for newcomers to the LA poly community.
Los Angeles Polyamory (Facebook)
The primary Facebook group for the LA poly community, event announcements, community discussion, and the social infrastructure of the scene. Essential for finding events beyond what makes it onto public listings.
Fetlife
The LA Fetlife community is one of the largest in the US. Essential for kink and BDSM events, leather community connections, and the private event scene that doesn't appear on public listings.
Practical notes
Geography and the car problem
Los Angeles is a car city. Most of the practical logistics of CNM community in LA, getting to events, first dates, ongoing connections, involve driving. Distance filters on apps need to account for travel time rather than just mileage; fifteen miles in LA traffic can mean forty-five minutes. Building community across the whole city is more effort than in a walkable urban environment, and most practitioners end up with a community that's concentrated in their corner of the metro area.
The transience factor
Like New York, LA has high population turnover, people arrive for the industry, stay for varying lengths of time, and leave. The CNM community is correspondingly transient in some layers. Building a stable social core requires more investment than attending events; relationships made through the community are worth cultivating actively.
Industry culture
The entertainment industry shapes social dynamics in ways that are worth being aware of. Schedules are irregular; travel for work is common; social capital is highly visible and sometimes performative. The CNM community here includes people navigating these dynamics alongside everything else non-monogamy involves, it's a specific context.
